County, School, and Other Government Entities

Union County County Commissioners

The Union County Board of Commissioners is the legislative and governing body of Union County and consists of five members, elected at-large. Commissioners serve four-year staggered terms. During the first meeting each December, the Chairman and Vice Chairman are elected by and from the Board of Commissioners.

The public portion of regular meetings is held monthly every first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in the Board Room on the first floor of the Union County Government Center (500 North Main Street, Monroe N.C.), unless otherwise indicated.

Closed Sessions are held from 5-6 p.m., prior to the public portion of the meeting, unless otherwise indicated on the schedule.

Union County Public School

The Union County Board of Education is made up of nine members. Six board members are elected from districts. There are three at-large members. All board members serve staggered four-year terms.

The primary functions of the board are to establish policies for the operation of the schools and to generally oversee that the superintendent and administrative staff who manage the system's day-to-day operations carry out these policies.

The board recognizes and welcomes its responsibility to hear requests and suggestions from delegations and individuals in the community. Public comments can be made to the Board at regular monthly open meetings. Persons wishing to address the school board must sign up by noon on the day of the meeting.

Elected officials serve the citizens of Monroe and provide the legislative and policy-making functions for City government, directing such action as required for the general welfare of the City through appropriate programs, services, and activities which promote confidence in City government.
