Subject: Keep Fluoride in Our Drinking Water
Dear Council Member,
I am writing as a resident and constituent to respectfully urge you to support maintaining fluoridation in Weddington’s public water system.
Community water fluoridation is one of the most well-studied and widely endorsed public health measures in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified fluoridation as one of the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century because of its significant impact on reducing tooth decay and improving oral health. ([CDC][1])
The science is clear: at the recommended level of 0.7 mg/L, fluoridated water is both safe and effective. Studies consistently show that fluoridation reduces tooth decay by approximately 25% in both children and adults. ([CDC][2]) This reduction translates into fewer cavities, less pain, fewer missed school and work days, and lower long-term dental costs for families.
Equally important, fluoridation promotes health equity. It benefits everyone in a community regardless of income, insurance status, or access to dental care. This is particularly important in communities where some residents may not have consistent access to preventive dental services. ([CDC][1])
Safety concerns are often raised, but decades of research and monitoring demonstrate that fluoridation at recommended levels is safe. U.S. water systems maintain fluoride levels far below established safety thresholds, with compliance rates exceeding 99.99% in national monitoring data. ([CDC][3]) Major health organizations—including the American Dental Association, American Medical Association, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services—continue to support fluoridation based on the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence. ([North Carolina Division of Public Health][4])
It is also important to note that while excessive fluoride exposure can cause issues, those risks occur at levels significantly higher than what is used in community water systems. At optimal levels, there is no credible evidence linking fluoridated water to serious health conditions. ([Health][5])
Removing fluoridation would not eliminate fluoride exposure, but it would remove one of the most effective, equitable, and cost-efficient tools we have to prevent dental disease. Evidence from communities that have discontinued fluoridation shows increases in dental problems, particularly among children.
For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to support policies that maintain fluoridation in Weddington’s water supply. This decision will protect public health, reduce healthcare costs, and ensure that all residents—especially children—have the opportunity for better oral health outcomes.
Thank you for your time and for your service to our community.
Sincerely,
